As a torrent of new innovations continues to flood the marketplace, smart home technologies are gaining value in consumers’ minds, according to a recent Harris Poll (link is external).

Sixty percent of Americans believe Internet-connected household devices are a positive development for homeowners – from safety benefits to cost-savings. Also, more than 78 percent surveyed said they expect new homes to be equipped with smart home technologies over the next five years.

The poll points to several “tipping points” that will impact the rate at which this trend will take off. Cost is the predominant obstacle to adoption. Thirty-seven percent said they will consider making smart home technology purchases when prices come down. Nine percent said they are waiting for technology “bugs” to be resolved prior to purchasing.

As price declines and technology becomes more reliable, consumers plan on investing in:

    Smart thermostats (40 percent);
    Smart lighting (37 percent);
    Wireless speaker systems (35 percent);
    Smart home security/monitoring systems (35 percent).

Notably, while 34 percent say they have one smart product at home, only 7 percent say they have embraced “smart home technology,” suggesting a disconnect with respect to the terminology understood by consumers.

Consumers are optimistic, though, about smart home technology. Within the next five years, 51 percent say they expect these technologies will have life-enhancing benefits, and 43 percent say it will positively influence how they manage their home.

A Coldwell Banker survey (link is external) of real estate sales associates indicates growing interest in smart home technologies among today’s buyers compared with two to five years ago:

    Sixty-two percent say buyers want to be able to control home technology via their smart phone or tablet.
    Sixty –four percent say buyers find homes more attractive when they have smart home features and technology, and one in three said homes with these features sell faster than ones that do not have them.
    Sixty percent say they have seen a substantial increase in the number of home listings that detail smart home features.

“After being on the ground at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, it was clear that the connective tissue of smart technology in the home is entering the mainstream,” said Coldwell Banker Chief Marketing Officer Sean Blankenship (link is external). “Smart homes are solving many consumer and societal needs when you consider all of the security, energy efficiency and entertainment advantages that come along with a connected home.”
